When it comes to creating content for a YouTube channel, there are seemingly endless possibilities. At any given moment, I could probably name ten different subjects that I could explore. The more important question, however, is not what could I create? but rather what should I continue creating?

There is a significant difference between a short-term experiment and something that can withstand the test of time.

Earlier this year, in April 2026, I began a journey into content creation through YouTube. My initial goal was to explore some of my many interests and see where the journey might lead. In retrospect, it became less about finding a single subject for YouTube and more about discovering what actually belonged at the centre of my future work.

Following many paths

If you know me personally, you probably know that my interests are fairly broad.

I have spent decades creating worlds through Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop role-playing. I have explored animation and storytelling, including projects such as Alfred the Fisherman. Music composition has been a long-standing interest, involving writing, arranging, and experimenting with audio technology. I have also explored game design and development, including 2D and browser-based projects.

Then there are subjects such as cooking and history, which I have enjoyed from a completely different perspective. I have watched cooking programs and explored historical subjects, including visiting East Berlin in the mid-1980s, before the Berlin Wall came down.

All of these interests have value to me.

But an interest does not necessarily have to become a career, a business, or even a long-term content channel.

That distinction became increasingly important as the year progressed.

The vehicle matters

During the spring and summer, I spent considerable time exploring AI-assisted content creation, video production, music and audio workflows, and educational material that could potentially be presented through YouTube.

At first, I was looking primarily at the subject matter.

Eventually, I began looking at the vehicle.

That distinction changed my perspective.

Music, history, cooking, role-playing, animation, and game development can all be presented through websites, video, or other forms of digital media. But the underlying vehicle that has consistently connected many of my own projects is something much closer to home: web design and development.

A website provides a means of communicating information. WordPress provides a practical content-management environment. YouTube provides another medium through which information can be presented. AI introduces yet another set of tools that can assist with creating and managing that content.

The subjects may change.

The underlying technology—and my experience with it—provides continuity.

From experimentation to direction

 This led me back to a realization that had been developing for some time.

My work in web design and development between 2011 and 2015 was not an isolated period in my life. It was part of a larger progression that included my BCIT training, my portfolio work, my experience with clients, my use of WordPress, and eventually my teaching.

Even the business I operated as ARC Web Design between 2013 and 2015 was built around the same basic idea: using web technology to provide services to people who needed a way to present themselves or their organizations online.

The name has changed over time. The technology has changed. My own skills have expanded.

But the underlying idea has remained remarkably consistent.

What stays—and what falls away

 As spring turned into summer, I began to recognize that some of my projects were better understood as experiments rather than destinations.

That does not make them failures.

An experiment can be useful precisely because it tells you what you do—or do not—want to pursue.

I also began to realize that YouTube itself should not necessarily determine what I work on. A subject might make an interesting video, but that does not automatically make it the right foundation for a long-term professional direction.

The websites in my portfolio are evidence of something much more enduring. They represent years of learning how to design, develop, structure, and communicate information through the web.

That experience is something I can continue building upon.

For me, WordPress represents a natural continuation of that journey. AI adds a new dimension to it, while YouTube provides an additional means of communicating what I learn and what I create.

To be or not to be

 By September 2026, the direction had become considerably clearer.

I no longer felt that I needed to choose one of my many personal interests and force it into becoming the subject of a YouTube channel.

Instead, I could return to the broader foundation that had been there all along.

My interests in music, games, history, animation, and other subjects can continue to exist. They do not have to disappear simply because they are not the centre of my professional work.

What has changed is my understanding of their place.

Some ideas are destinations.

Others are side roads.

And some are simply interesting places to visit along the way.

For now, my path leads back toward the intersection of web design and development, WordPress, AI, and video-based communication—areas that connect my technical education, professional experience, teaching background, and more recent experimentation with content creation.

Perhaps the real question was never “What should my YouTube channel be about?”

Perhaps it was:

“What do I want to build upon for the years ahead?”

I think I finally have an answer.
